Understanding how exhaust & muffler systems work is the key to making sure yours is healthy and your vehicle efficient. There are many different ways to figure out the best exhaust system for your needs, and professional experience and know-how can often be the best determining factor.
The simple purpose of an exhaust & muffler system is to take the leftover mixture from the cylinders of the engine and evacuate it as far away from the people as possible. This generally means that the exhaust gases are collected from a manifold or header and then routed along the underside of your car or truck to the back of the vehicle.
In vehicles with a turbocharger, the exhaust system is considered to begin after the turbocharger. These exhaust gases are routed by a set of piping and tubing to the catalytic converter, which further reduces harmful gases headed towards open air. From the converter, a pipe carries the exhaust gases towards the rear of the vehicle, where it passes through a noise-reducing or cancelling space: the muffler. A short length of pipe then vents the exhaust out and away from the vehicle. Depending on your specific needs, your exhaust & muffler system can be tuned or aftermarket pieces used to modify or increase the performance or efficiency of your vehicle.
